I first came across this picture in my high school's art studio and when I later came across an original image of Pear Blossom highway it quickly became apparent that there were many things included in Hockney's image that were not present in the original photograph.
Hockney made his image by taking different pictures while walking closer to some of the items and getting close ups. After all his pictures are assembled again it looks like they were all taken from the same spot (as i assumed on first site).
I think hockeys goal was to take a boring uninteresting scene and creatively turn it in to something of a interesting, well balanced composition, which he has certainly achieved.
